Differentiation is key today in retail design. For this concept, BOSE brief was to target younger audience with surprising displays that would depict technology and innovation. We chose fabric as a core material to our thinking, for its softness and comfy feeling. The idea for us was to suggest some shapes without showing them, to intrigue the customer passing by. Then when reaching for a product, a light animation magically appears from under the material to spark the product. Surprise and magic were driving force to our concept.
Technically, we really re-thought the way to conceive an itinerant shop from ground up. The idea was to create simple and resistant structure that could hold the heavy duty of assembly and disassembly. Then at the last moment, wrap this structure with a renewable skin.
The biggest challenge was to find the right skin. Stretchable, it should be resistant, have a silk touch feeling, and allow light to go through. Once we had it, any shape we would design, the fabric would just mold the shapes and create its own one due to the stretch.
The result looked like an distant spaceship which had landed in your nearby shopping mall. The eye-catching effect was working perfectly. Feedbacks from the audience and the client were very positive, and the staff witnessed a 200% sales increase the first week.
